Volkswagen of America’s smallest crossover gets major upgrades. The vehicle’s front sports a big Kia Soul-like grille and revised bumpers creating a more muscular appearance. Optional exterior lighting includes light bars and illuminated logos. New exterior colors, such as Bright Moss Green, and new wheels further freshen the Taos.
The vehicle’s 1.5-liter engine has more power: was 158 hp, now 174 hp. VW claims it rounded up more ponies with revised hardware including piston rings, fuel injectors, turbocharger housing, intercooler and gasoline particulate filter.
All-wheel-drive models (4Motion) now trot via an eight-speed automatic, which replaces that model’s “clunky” seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The fancier dashboard features a standard eight-inch infotainment screen. VW says revised acoustic dampening reduces cabin noise. Those who pony up for the SEL trim can order dark-blue leather seating.
