Nov. 11, 2019: VW says the revamped 2020 Passat looks bolder, offers upgraded technology and has an attractive price: $23,915 including destination.
Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert. Options: 19-inch wheels, heated rear seats, Fender audio, Lane Assist, Park Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. There are four trims: S, SE, R-Line and SEL.
The Passat’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine produces 174 horsepower. Torque output is up: 206 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic with new torque converter routes energy to the front wheels.
The American-made Passat rides on the old one’s underpinnings. Reworked exterior panels and side-glass impart a faster roofline. Inside, the rectilinear dashboard has horizontal vents and a glass-covered infotainment screen. SE trim ($26,765) nets keyless access with pushbutton start, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and USB charging ports in the rear. A sunroof is optional ($995).
R-Line ($29,565) adds standard sunroof and numerous sporting accents. SEL ($32,015) gets leather seating surfaces, automatic high beams, heated rear seats, Fender audio, hands-free trunk opening and parking assist.
VW’s upgraded Car-Net with WiFi and smartphone integration arrives later next year on SE and higher trims.
