Mk8 GTI and Golf R at CAS

VWoA introduced the new GTI and Golf R at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show press preview.  MSRP for the S model with manual transmission is $30,540 including destination fee.  The AWD Golf R starts at $44,640 with manual transmission.  All models feature a high level of comfort and convenience features such as heated front seats with updated plaid upholstery dubbed “Scalepaper” tartan.  And yes, the manual’s shift lever is topped with a dimpled quasi orb.

Sourced from Wolfsburg, these autos continue the Golf’s design formula with a sleeker, sportier theme.  VW says GTI/Golf R vehicle dynamics are improved.  New electronic architecture includes a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster.

GTI horsepower is up 13 to 241.  The R adds 27 ponies to 315 hp.  VW limits top for either model to 155 mph.

VW’s IQ.Drive suite is available on all models.  It has hands-on semi-automated capability.  Expect these hot hatches at your VW store Q4 2021.
