40th Anniversary 2023 VW Golf GTI; VW’s European Sales Gulf

VWoA says it will offer about 1,500 40th-Anniversary Edition GTIs.  Half will have six-speed manuals and the rest seven-speed DSG automatics.  Expect four exterior colors.  Two are exclusive:  Tornado Red and Urano Gray.

Gloss-black 19-inch wheels with red pinstripes, gloss-black roof, black mirror caps, honeycomb trim and “40” elements inside and out further celebrate the GTI’s aesthetic charms.  Performance summer tires, adaptive dampers and speed-sensitive steering add to the fun.  The engine cranks out 241 horsepower, the trend-setting 1983 Rabbit GTI sported 90 horsepower.

Report from Europe, VW Group’s 2022 Sales Through October

Sales data show VW Group’s spot at the top of the European motor vehicle sales chart continues.  Nevertheless, its share is down, as other carmakers make gains.

Look at the figures for VW Group’s perennial best-selling Golf and related teammates at Seat and Skoda.  Golf sales are down 44,974, Seat Leon dropped 38,365 and Skoda Octavia lost 29,097.

While the Golf still wears the compact-car segment’s sales crown, it’s no longer Europe’s best-selling nameplate.  Peugeot and Dacia models surpassed it.  VW cites production cuts due to supply problems.  For example, VW stopped taking orders for the Golf GTE (plug-in hybrid).  VW’s European order bank is reported as six months or about 1.9 million units.
